Planning your maternity photoshoot is an exciting part of getting ready to welcome your little one. Whether you love soft, elegant portraits or want photos that show off your growing bump, choosing the right poses can make a big difference in your final gallery.
At Fotos by Flores Studio in Manor, Texas, I love creating maternity portraits that celebrate this special season of life. You don't need to know how to pose before your session, either! I'll guide you through the process so you can feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
If you're planning your own maternity session, here are three poses worth trying.
1. Lay Down for a Soft, Elegant Portrait
Lying down can create a beautiful, relaxed look for maternity photos. This pose works especially well when you want to highlight your baby bump and create something a little different from traditional standing portraits.
Depending on your outfit and the setup, you can lie on your side or recline slightly with your upper body supported. Gently rest your hands on your belly to draw attention to your bump. You can also extend one arm above your head or let your hand rest near your hair for a more editorial look.
Flowing fabrics, such as chiffon, can add movement and texture to the image. If you're using a studio backdrop, arranging the fabric around you can help create a beautiful composition.
Photographer tip: Pay attention to the angle of your body and the direction of the light. A slight turn toward the camera can help define your silhouette and make your baby bump stand out.
Always choose a comfortable position, especially later in pregnancy. You should never feel like you have to lie flat on your back to get a beautiful photo.
2. Hold Your Belly and Look Over Your Shoulder
If you want a maternity portrait that highlights your bump while adding a little variety, try turning your body slightly away from the camera and looking back over your shoulder.
Start by standing at an angle instead of facing the camera straight on. Place one hand underneath your belly and the other gently across the top or side. Then turn your head toward the camera, allowing your shoulders and face to follow naturally.
This pose creates dimension because it shows both your baby bump and your profile. It can also highlight the shape of your dress, especially if you're wearing a fitted gown or a flowing maternity outfit.
You can experiment with different expressions, too. Try a soft smile, look down at your belly, or gaze directly at the camera for a more confident portrait.
Photographer tip: Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid twisting too far. Small adjustments to your feet, hips, and chin can make the pose look much more natural.
This is one of my favorite poses to include in a maternity gallery because a few simple changes can create several different portraits without needing a completely new setup.
3. Sit Down and Hold Your Belly
Seated maternity poses are a wonderful way to add variety to your gallery. They can feel intimate and relaxed while keeping the focus on your growing baby bump.
You can sit on a studio posing stool, a chair, or another stable surface that fits the look you're going for. Turn your body slightly to the side and place both hands gently around your belly. Depending on your outfit, you can also drape flowing fabric around your legs for a softer, more styled appearance.
For a few variations, look down at your belly, close your eyes, or look toward the camera. You can also shift your hands slightly to create different compositions.
Photographer tip: Sit tall without making your posture feel stiff. Keeping your back comfortable and your shoulders relaxed will help you look natural in the final images.
Choose a seat that is stable and easy to get in and out of, and make sure you feel supported throughout the pose.
