Welcoming a new baby is a big change for the entire family, especially for big brother or big sister! Newborn photos are a wonderful way to remember those first few days together and capture the beginning of a brand-new sibling relationship.

But if you have a toddler or young child at home, you might be wondering how they'll do during the photoshoot. Will they sit still? Will they want to hold the baby? What happens if they aren't interested in pictures that day?

As a newborn photographer serving Manor, TX, and the surrounding Austin area, I always recommend keeping sibling photos simple, relaxed, and focused on letting your little ones be themselves. Here are three tips to help make your newborn session a little easier!

1. Keep It Simple and Follow Their Lead

You don't need your toddler to sit perfectly still or smile at the camera for every photo. Sometimes, the sweetest sibling pictures happen when children are allowed to interact naturally with their new baby.

Try asking your child to sit next to the baby, gently touch their tiny feet, or give them a kiss on the forehead. These little interactions can create beautiful photographs without making the experience feel like a chore.

If your toddler isn't interested in participating right away, that's okay! Give them a little time to warm up, and avoid putting too much pressure on them to perform. The goal is to capture their connection, not to get every pose exactly right.

2. Make Sure Everyone Is Comfortable and Safe

Safety is always the priority when photographing a newborn with an older sibling. Young children may not fully understand how delicate newborns are, so it's important to choose poses that are appropriate for their age and abilities.

For younger toddlers, having them sit on the floor with the baby safely positioned nearby is often a great option. Another idea is to photograph your older child lying beside the baby while a parent or photographer stays close to supervise.

If you'd love a photo of your toddler holding the baby, make sure a parent supports the newborn throughout the pose. Never leave a newborn unattended with a young sibling, even for a quick picture.

Comfortable, safe poses help everyone relax and allow us to focus on capturing those sweet family connections.

3. Bring a Little Patience (and a Favorite Snack!)

Newborn sessions can take time, and asking a toddler to participate for an extended period can be challenging. One of my favorite tips is to plan sibling photos early in the session, while your older child has the most energy.

Bring a favorite snack, a small toy, or another familiar comfort item to help keep them happy between photos. You can also let them know how special their role as a big sibling is without making them feel like they have to get everything right.

And remember, we don't need to spend the entire session taking sibling photos. Once we've captured a few sweet images together, your older child can take a break with another family member while we continue photographing the newborn.

A little flexibility goes a long way!
