Pet photography can be so much fun, but if you've ever tried taking professional photos of a dog that refuses to sit still, you already know it can also be a little chaotic.
Whether you're photographing your own pet at home or bringing your dog into a photography studio, a few simple tricks can make a huge difference. Here are three of my favorite tips for getting better pet portraits in the studio.
1. Give Your Pet Time to Get Comfortable
Don't expect your dog to walk into a new studio and immediately sit perfectly in front of the camera.
Let them sniff around, explore the space, and get familiar with the new smells, sounds, lights, and people. This is especially helpful for dogs who are nervous in unfamiliar environments.
I like to give pets a little time to settle in before jumping straight into photos. Once they start relaxing, you'll have a much easier time capturing natural expressions and their actual personality.
And don't worry if your dog doesn't cooperate right away. That's part of pet photography!
2. Use Treats, Toys, and Sounds to Get Their Attention
Sometimes the easiest way to get a great pet portrait is to use whatever already gets your pet's attention. Bring their favorite treats or a toy they love. You can also use sounds, squeakers, or even their name to get them looking toward the camera. The key is to be ready to take the photo quickly.
Pets don't have the longest attention span, so you might only get a second or two of that perfect expression before they're looking somewhere else.
I also recommend having treats available even if your dog knows basic commands. A little extra motivation can make studio portraits much easier.
3. Get Down to Their Eye Level
One of my favorite ways to photograph pets is to get down to their level.
Instead of photographing your dog from above, try getting your camera closer to their eye level. This creates a much more engaging portrait and puts the focus on their face and personality.
Don't be afraid to try different angles, either. Get a few full-body portraits, then move in for close-ups of their eyes, nose, paws, and those little details that make them uniquely yours.
Sometimes the best photo isn't the perfectly posed one. It's the expression that shows exactly who they are.
