When you think of maternity photography, you might picture flowing dresses, soft lighting, beautiful outdoor locations, and classic poses.
And while those images are timeless, maternity photography can also be something completely different.
Recently, I had the opportunity to create a maternity session around a concept that was anything but traditional. The vision was to create the feeling of being surrounded by water, using reflective paper on the floor to create a water-like effect beneath the mother.
The result was artistic, dramatic, and completely unique.
Creating the Illusion of Water
One of my favorite parts of photography is figuring out how to turn a creative idea into something tangible.
For this session, reflective paper was placed beneath the subject to create the appearance of water reflecting her body and the surrounding light. Rather than needing an actual pool or elaborate location, we were able to create the illusion right inside the studio.
The reflective surface added another layer to the portraits. It caught the light, reflected the fabric, and created subtle visual movement that made the images feel almost dreamlike.
It was a great reminder that sometimes the most interesting photographs come from thinking outside the box.
Maternity Photography Doesn't Have to Look One Way
Every expecting mother has a different personality and vision for her maternity portraits.
Some moms want something soft and romantic. Others want something bold, editorial, artistic, or completely unexpected.
That's one of the reasons I love creating maternity portraits. Your session doesn't have to follow a formula.
