Walking into a photography studio can feel like a big experience for a child.
There are new surroundings, bright lights, a camera, and a photographer they may have never met before. And honestly? Expecting a child to immediately sit still, smile, and pose perfectly is not realistic.
At Fotos by Flores, I want your kiddo to feel comfortable, relaxed, and like they can be themselves. A successful session isn't about forcing a perfect smile. It's about creating an environment where your child feels safe enough to have fun.
Here are a few ways we can help make that happen.
Snacks Are Always Welcome
Yes, you can bring snacks!
Sometimes a hungry kiddo is simply a kiddo who needs a snack. I would much rather take a few minutes for a quick snack break than try to photograph a child who is tired, hungry, or frustrated.
I recommend bringing small, easy-to-eat snacks and water. A little snack can be the reset they need before we're ready to get back to photos.
Breaks Are Needed
Kids aren't built to stand in one spot for an hour, and I don't expect them to.
If your child needs a break, we'll take one. Sometimes they need a few minutes to sit down, have a snack, drink some water, or simply step away from the camera.
Taking a break doesn't mean the session isn't going well. Sometimes it's exactly what we need to get those genuine smiles and happy expressions.
Playing Is Okay!
One of my favorite ways to photograph children is to let them play.
Depending on the session, I may encourage your child to move around, explore the studio, dance, jump, play with props, or just be silly. Those moments often create some of the most genuine photographs.
You don't have to worry about your child being "too much." We can work with their personality instead of trying to change it.
Let's Play Their Music
Before your session, I will typically ask parents what type of music their kiddo enjoys.
Music can completely change the atmosphere of a session. Having their favorite songs playing in the background can help make the studio feel more familiar and comfortable.
Whether they love Disney songs, Taylor Swift, country music, or something completely random, send me their favorites! Creating a calm and familiar environment can make a huge difference.
Don't Stress About Perfect
This might be the most important thing I can tell parents: don't stress about getting the perfect photo.
Kids pick up on our energy. If you're worried because they're not smiling or sitting still, they can feel that pressure too.
Instead, let them have fun. Let them laugh. Let them move around. Let them be silly.
I'll take care of the photography.
My goal isn't just to capture what your child looks like. I want to capture who they are right now. The little personality quirks, the big laughs, the serious faces, and all of the things that make them uniquely yours.
So come into the studio, bring the snacks, bring their favorite playlist, and let your kiddo be a kid. We'll make some memories along the way.
