Outdoor photos aren't the WORST.

Planning outdoor family photos with a 1-year-old can feel a little intimidating. At this age, babies are usually busy exploring, walking, crawling and trying to keep up with everything happening around them. Getting them to sit still and smile for an entire photo session isn't realistic, and that's okay!

As a Manor, TX family photographer, I actually love photographing families with little ones because some of the best images happen when children are allowed to be themselves.

Here are three tips to help make your outdoor family photos with a 1-year-old easier and more enjoyable.

1. Let Your 1-Year-Old Move

One of the biggest mistakes parents make is trying to keep a 1-year-old sitting still for every photo. At this age, movement is completely normal.

Instead of expecting your little one to sit and smile, let them walk, explore, hold your hand or interact with you. We can capture them running toward you, holding onto a parent, playing with their surroundings or simply looking around.

You don't need your child to cooperate perfectly for beautiful family photos. I'll guide you through different poses while also allowing plenty of opportunities for natural interaction.

2. Bring a Favorite Snack

A small, familiar snack can be extremely helpful during an outdoor family photography session.

Choose something that isn't too messy or likely to stain clothing. Snacks can help keep your little one happy while we move between different locations or give them a quick break.

You can also bring a favorite toy or comfort item. We may not use it in every photo, but having something familiar nearby can help your child feel more comfortable in a new environment.

3. Keep Things Moving

One-year-olds don't have long attention spans, so there's no reason to spend several minutes trying to get one perfect picture.

During your session, we'll switch things up. We might start with a few family portraits, then let your little one walk around, followed by photos with Mom, Dad or siblings.

The goal isn't to make your child perform for the camera. It's to create a relaxed experience where we can capture your family interacting naturally.

Don't Stress About Getting the Perfect Smile

Your 1-year-old may smile in some photos, look serious in others and completely ignore the camera in a few. That's all part of this stage!

The little expressions, tiny hands, wobbly steps and interactions with Mom and Dad are what make this age so special to photograph.
