Gone are the days where everyone in the family has to wear the exact same pattern for a family photo to look good.

I mean, if you love a matching moment, by all means, go for it!

But if you want your photos to feel more natural and timeless, coordinating is the way to go.



1. Choose colors that complement each other


One of my favorite ways to style a family session is by choosing different shades of the same color.

For example, a family wearing shades of tan, cream, brown, and white can look super cohesive without everyone looking like they’re wearing the exact same outfit.

The goal is for everyone's outfits to work together without looking like you planned a family uniform.


2. Don't get TOO matchy-matchy


Here's where I see people get stuck: they choose colors that are so similar that everyone starts blending together.

You want the colors to complement each other, but you don't want everyone wearing the exact same shade of beige from head to toe.

Try mixing different shades and textures instead. Brown and white, cream and tan, or even soft neutral colors can all give you that cohesive look without being boring.


3. Think about the overall vibe


Before you pick out everyone's outfits, think about what you want your photos to feel like.

Do you want them to feel warm and cozy? Light and airy? Neutral and timeless? Your outfits should help create that feeling.


4. Be careful with colors that clash

Please don't put one person in a bright red dress while everyone else is wearing soft browns and neutrals.


IT WILL CLASH. 😂


Your eye is naturally going to go straight to that bright red dress instead of taking in the family as a whole.

Instead, choose colors that give off the same vibe and complement one another.


5. Let everyone still be themselves


Your family doesn't have to look perfect or overly styled for your photos to be beautiful.

I want you to look back at these photos and still recognize yourselves, not a family that was forced into matching outfits just for pictures.

So wear the things that make you feel good, choose colors that work together, and don't overthink it.

At the end of the day, the most important thing isn't what everyone is wearing. It's the people you're taking the photos with.

And those are the memories worth capturing.
